Ibsen's "Hedda Gabler" has been described as the role closest to Hamlet in the female repertoire. Since Hedda was unleashed on the world in 1891, the role has attracted a formidable range of top-flight actresses keen to test themselves against its exceptional demands - from Peggy Ashcroft, Maggie Smith, Joan Greenwood and Janet Suzman to Fiona Shaw, Eve Best, Cate Blanchett, Harriet Walter and most recently two-time Laurence Olivier Award winner-Sheridan Smith.

The Aux Dog Theatre Nob Hill is very excited to bring this extraordinarily complex character to it's Regional Premiere!

Hedda Gabler, a reluctant bride verging on spinsterhood~ returns, dissatisfied from a long honeymoon. Bored by her dependable academic husband, she foresees a life of tedious convention, one of a middle-class housewife. Until a chance reunion serves up a lethal cocktail of unrequited love, smoldering passions and jealousy~ leading to catastrophic results.

Hedda Gabler is usually performed as a period drama set in 1890. Since this new version, takes a more humourous approach to the play, we felt it was important to find a way to modernize the overall perception of the piece.

Our director, Jessica Osbourne, has selected Boston in the 1960's as the physiological and emotional parallel to Norway at the turn of the 19th century.

Before the second wave of the feminist movement in the 1970's, women in the early sixties still felt the pressures of marriage, children and social status.

As the daughter of a wealthy General, Hedda was never required to enter the workforce. She had no inclination to work and was not prepared for the financial struggles that followed her father's untimely demise. After her fathers death, she is left with little choice but to marry someone who meets her standards of social status and conservative lifestyle.

Brian Friel's new version of this classic, comes fresh from London's Old Vic Theatre with phenomenal reviews and an Olivier Nomination!

This critically acclaimed classic will inspire both seasoned and new theatre-goers alike, to leave their couches and venture into the theatre for an unforgettable experience.
