Cabaret at Spencer Theater Slated for Saturday, March 13

In a downward spiral of decadence, new found romance and dangerous intrigue is born in "Cabaret the Musical", the riveting tale of a culture's dark history marked by indelibly great songs and jazzy dancing. The winner of 12 Tony Awards, including four following its1998 Broadway revival, the provocative musical comes to the Spencer Theater on Saturday, March 13 at 8 p.m. ($69 & $66) for a one-night-only musical extravaganza.

Presented by Windwood Theatricals (Little Women, Urban Cowboy The Musical, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers), "Cabaret, the Musical" tells the story of a night club singer's romance with an American writer set against the background of a crumbling Germany on the eve of Nazism. With music and lyrics by John Kander and Fred Ebb, and book by Joe Masteroff, "Cabaret" features some of the best-known songs in musical history, including "Willkommen," "Maybe This Time," "Money (Makes The World go Around)" and "Cabaret."

Few musicals have been reincarnated so successfully in so many different forms. When "Cabaret" first premiered on stage in 1966, it was considered revolutionary for utilizing the musical form - a predominately upbeat genre with light stories - as the narrative vehicle for haunting history - the rise of the Third Reich and growing German anti-Semitism. The production, based on John Van Druten's Broadway play "I Am a Camera," which was in turn based on Christopher Isherwood's book "Berlin Stories," proved to be a huge hit with critics and audiences alike, winning eight Tony Awards including Best Musical. "Cabaret" made a splash again in 1972 as a Hollywood movie starring Joel Grey and Liza Minnelli, winning eight Academy Awards. The 1998 stage revival merges aspects of both productions, utilizing characters in the subplot dismissed in the film version, as well as cabaret-style songs added in the film version. More of the action takes place in the seedy Kit Kat Klub, where the self-destructive Sally Bowles performs and meets the American writer Clifford Bradshaw, and the Emcee relates the sado-masochist surrealism of nightlife in Weimar-era Berlin.

Don't miss out on this daunting musical experience. Call the Spencer Box Office at 575.336.4800 or go online to www.spencertheater.com for tickets.
