Creative Albuquerque and National Hispanic Cultural Center Host Creative Economy Symposium, 10/19

Creative Albuquerque, in partnership with the National Hispanic Cultural Center, is proud to announce its third annual Albuquerque Symposium on the Creative Economy October 19, 2012 at the National Hispanic Cultural Center.

The cornerstone of the organization’s Creative Economy Education Project, the Symposium features two internationally renowned keynote speakers and two panel discussions. Titled PROFIT: From Striving to Thriving, the daylong event (8 a.m. to 5 p.m.) focuses on how being in business is as much a creative endeavor as writing a book, composing an opera or coding software, and how creatives can profit from their ideas without giving up their creative vision. The event fosters dialogue and increases shared knowledge, featuring two keynote sessions, two panel presentations, roundtable discussions over lunch, and a coffee welcome.

Tickets are $67 for Creative Albuquerque members, $87 for non-members. Advance tickets required. To avoid service fees, call the National Hispanic Cultural Center ticket office at 505-724-4771. Or buy online at the NHCC website, HERE.

The event opens with a morning keynote from Marlene Richey, author of Profiting by Design: A Jewelry Maker’s Guide to Business Success. Ms. Richey will discuss how successful creatives thrive, not just survive, by taking an entrepreneurial tack, whether that comes naturally or not. The child of an art professor and writer, Ms. Richey is an artist and designer who created an award-winning jewelry design firm with no idea of how to run a company. She now teaches the business of jewelry design both nationally and internationally, writes a regular column in Art Jewelry magazine called “Business Savvy.”

Two panels explore how profiting from your creativity is more than “make it and they will buy it” proposition. Each panel features three panelists plus a moderator. The first panel, Messaging Mojo, discusses what it takes to get great marketing, public relations and advertising in front of your customers and the media and how to reach your customers in many ways with compelling messages. Moderator Maresa Thompson, Marketing and Creative Director of Heritage Hotels, leads the panel, which includes Eugene Brill, Rio Grande Group; Christopher Morales, owner, Golden Crown Panaderia; and Miriam Ortiz y Pino, Certified Professional Organizer, More than Organized.

The second panel, Show Me The Money, focuses on ways to fund creative projects without losing your artistic vision: everything from micro loans to using social media in order to open pockets, even in times when traditional grant funding is declining.

Moderator David Vogel, philanthropy and sustainable economic and business model researcher, will lead Lauren Myers, Actor/Social Media Director, Duke City Repertory Theatre; Tim Nisly, TEDxABQ/South Valley Economic Development Center; and Jordan van Rijn, Accion New Mexico • Arizona • Colorado.

During lunch panelists, moderators and other subject matter experts will host open roundtables where participants can discuss topics and issues of interest to them, and network with others.

The second keynote speaker, Jay Martin, inventor and entrepreneur, will discuss the link between creativity and entrepreneurship. MR. Martin is a career inventor and entrepreneur who has launched numerous business in various fields based on his inventions, including helping create the nation’s largest prosthetics research and development company. He now mentors other innovators and entrepreneurs to help them bring their ideas to fruition.
