Back by popular demand, pianist Doug Montgomery returns to the Spencer Theater on Saturday, June 2 at 8 p.m. for a concert of classical music and popular show tunes.
A resident of Santa Fe, New Mexico since 1982, Montgomery spends most summers as the featured entertainer at the famed Vanessie Restaurant.
“I enjoy the heck out of myself,” he says. “I’m there surrounded by delighted people, with great memories and connection to the piano. I’m there to help spread the joy!”
With 12 piano recordings, Montgomery’s most recent release, “Mediterranean Nights” is a 23-track compilation of classic songs of romance like “Besame Mucho,” “Theme from ‘The Godfather,’” “Amor Amor Amor” and “O Sole Mio.”
He has plans to record a new vocal CD featuring 20 to 30 ballads and movie themes with tunes like “You Look Wonderful Tonight,” “Desperado,” “Fields of Gold,” “Two for the Road,” “To Make You Feel My Love,” “99 Miles From L.A.” and “Wichita Lineman.” (Several of these tunes will be performed at his Spencer gig, he says).
Montgomery is an active solo performer, and has performed as a featured artist with symphonies throughout the United States, parts of Europe and South America. The popular artist also maintains a busy schedule traveling to private and public engagements, enchanting noteworthy admirers from Barbara Walters to Oscar De La Renta, New Mexico governors and even George H.W. Bush at his 1989 Inauguration. Most recently Doug enjoyed standing-room-only nights at Vicky’s at Santa Fe in California, where he regularly performs through the winter months. He also performed at a sold-out run of concerts in Denver featuring this piano interpretations Gershwin music with a 130-person choir, a 13-piece band and an ensemble of dancers. “It was a marvelous experience,” Doug says.
He’s served as the handpicked accompanist to the world-famous opera mezzo-soprano Susan Graham at the Manhattan Opera Club and has been honored as the “Artist of the Year” by the Arthritis Foundation of Arizona & New Mexico for his “devotion to bringing the healing powers of music to thousands of listeners annually.”
